Today’s job market is more competitive than ever not
only for those seeking employment, but for employers too. In America we see a record
number of people out of work or dissatisfied with their current job and career.
With the number of jobs available in comparison to the number of people out of
work and looking it would seem employers would have an easy time finding the
right people. However, employers are not receiving the job applications for
positions for which they are seeking. This leaves the employer scratching their
head asking the question, why?
Potential employees spend much of their day seeking
and applying for jobs and with such stiff competition out there today, time is
valuable. Some employers use computerized job applications to do the pre-screening.
This taxes the job seeker with numerous required questions in addition to
attaching their resume. These added questions could stop the best candidates
due to the time it takes to fill them out, time is important. Many of these candidates
know the employer can or will receive 100 plus applications and due to programming
they know there is a particular set of answers they must meet. If they do not pass
the first scan they know they have wasted valuable time which could have been
used to apply for five or six other positions that day.
Jobigami.com polled
various applicants on how they feel about the online job application process
and some of their responses may surprise you. One job seeker said, “I dislike
the computerized screening and questions. I feel like a number instead of a
person. How will they treat me if I became an employee?” Another job seeker
said, “The one question I hate most! What did you make on your previous job?
They are taking away my power to negotiate.” Most of the job seekers like when
employers tell them how much the job pays. This helps them decide if they
should even apply or can afford to apply.
- As employers desire top talent changes may be needed to meet that desire. Here are a few things to consider the next time you post a job.
- Request resumes for review and keep questions to minimum online.
- Review every application yourself, go through the experience of candidates for those matches you seek.
- Remember, the computer is only as good as the programmer.
- If the applicant does not meet the requirements, let them know and give a little information as to why.
- If they do meet the requirements, follow up with an email directing them to an online follow-up questionnaire.
The follow-up email alerts the job seeker they have
met the requirements and you are considering them. The job seeker will be more
incline to sit and fill out long application and feel their time is not being
wasted. Not only will the responses from candidates be more in depth, it will
assist you in locating the top tier talent you want from the most qualified
candidates.
